The Hope and Promise of Bezos’ Golden City

Amazon is searching for the city with the Golden ticket. The New York Times reports that 20 of the 238 requesting candidate cities have been selected for the final consideration. A fierce “fight” was made by competing mayors to entice the burgeoning company. This year, 2018, Jeff Bezos will announce which North American city will be the new headquarters for Amazon and the world’s richest man ever. The winning city will garner up to 50,000 jobs over the next 10-15 years. The world’s newest Solomon will select his Jerusalem and, according to Entrepreneur, a new 5 billion dollar campus will be built. A new temple is about to be built, El Dorado style.

Movies and songs have been made about El Dorado or the lost city of Gold. Men have lost everything in search of it’s enriching promise. The legend is explained on Wikipedia thusly:

El Dorado: Spanish for “the golden one”), originally El Hombre Dorado (the golden man), or El Rey Dorado (the golden king), was the term used by the Spanish Empire to describe a mythical tribal chief (zipa) of the Muisca native people of Colombia, who, as an initiation rite, covered himself with gold dust and submerged in Lake Guatavita. The legends surrounding El Dorado changed over time, as it went from being a man, to a city, to a kingdom, and then finally an empire.

A second location for El Dorado was inferred from rumors, which inspired several unsuccessful expeditions in the late 1500s in search of a city called Manõa on the shores of Lake Parime. Two of the most famous of these expeditions were led by Sir Walter Raleigh. In pursuit of the legend, Spanish conquistadors and numerous others searched Colombia, Venezuela, and parts of Guyana and northern Brazil for the city and its fabulous king. In the course of these explorations, much of northern South America, including the Amazon River, was mapped. By the beginning of the 19th century most people dismissed the existence of the city as a myth.

The New Republic reports that Amazon received a billion dollars in perks from cities willing to give it tax breaks or other corporate incentives. In turn, Amazon boasts that it brought the city of Seattle 38 billion dollars in revenue between 2010 and 2016. This amounts to a grand bribery scandal or what the Atlantic says is an exploitation of “the American System”. Bezos artfully pits cities, states, and even the feds against each other. They, like the Amazon tribes offer their sacrifices. He like the El Dorado, or golden king, covers himself with golden dust, a man-god acting everybit their messiah. Many are left wondering, “will the new HQ have a pyramid, a throne or both?”

Christians have seen many such utopias offered through the millennia but none have kept their promises. We do not attempt to build our own El Dorado. However, the Scripture is plain regarding a coming Golden city. The Apostle Paul, writes regarding Abraham’s own search:

“By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:
For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.” -Hebrews 11:8-10

John authored the Revelation speaking of this same city in chapter 21:

Vv. 2-3 “And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.”
Vv. 10-11 “And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,
Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal;
Vv. 18-19 “And the building of the wall of it was of jasper: and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass.
And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones…
Vv. 22-26 “And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.
And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.
And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.
And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it.”

Jesus Himself promised, “In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”

It is clear that Mr. Bezos is attempting to once again build a counterfeit city, a modern Babel or Babylon that mirrors the coming great city of God. Where would such hubris come from? Perhaps it comes from the same whispered promise given by a subtle serpent in the garden, “Jeff, ye shall be as gods.”

This year should be interesting and filled with both hype and mystery surrounding the new El Dorado.
